The ancient Colosseum in Rome is something of a paradox: it is an extraordinary architectural treasure of the ancient world, showing the heights of human architecture and building skill, but it is also a testament to human depravity, a cursed arena where people were killed for sport and entertainment.
Construction of the Colosseum began under Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD and was completed just eight years later (with some later modifications). Made of limestone, volcanic rock, and concrete, the Colosseum was and is the largest free-standing amphitheater in the world and could seat up to 80,000 spectators. What those spectators watched was another matter entirely. Gladiator battles to the death. Public executions. Animals slaughtered. Reenactments of famous battles, including naval ones for which the Colosseum was flooded. The Colosseum served up a river of blood to a bloodthirsty audience. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the building was put to various uses: housing, workshops, a cemetery, a bandits' hideout, and a Christian sanctuary. Today, it is a tourist attraction, a symbol of Rome, and the image on the Italian 5-cent coin.
The Colosseum model from Ugears World Cities collection is a 1:1000 scale DIY wooden model of the iconic amphitheater, measuring 100 x 75 x 85 mm. With 63 elements made of artist-quality composite wood, the Colosseum is classified as "Easy" and can be built in about 30 minutes. No glue or special tools are needed - just pop the pieces out of the laser-cut boards and snap them together. Illustrated instructions in 11 languages (English, German, Ukrainian, French, Polish, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, Chinese and Korean) guide the construction. This static 3D puzzle is perfect for display on a shelf or table at home or in the office.
